The sky was a dark dull colour like a television that's been turned to a dead channel. I remember, it was September the 11th, Isaac’s birthday. I met him at a cafe in town that morning. He walked me to work and said goodbye at the entrance to the World Trade Centre.
I got to my computer and I was greeted by an email that read...Emily, please come to the 42nd floor for an urgent meeting. “Great” I was thinking “a staff meeting and it’s only 8:30!” I made my way in the elevator from the ninetieth floor down to floor number 42. I settled into my meeting and opened my laptop when my boss told me to go make some coffee. Part of me was ready to blurt out, “make your own coffee you lazy sod!” Reluctantly I slumped my way to the kitchen and flicked the switch on the urn. I heard a bone chilling explosion that made the whole building shake! I have never heard such an intense bang in my life! I raced over to the window and could see the air was polluted with debris. I could hear muffled screams and cries for help. I knew I had to make a run for it out of the building.
I hurled myself out the door and got swept up by the swarming rush of people that were also heading toward the stairs. I could hear my heart pumping fast with fear. We were at about floor 39 and I noticed there was smoke filling the air, making us choke. The building was on fire! When I had reached about floor 18 I stumbled on a step and fell. I landed on my right knee, it was agony! I limped my way down the stairs in absolute pain. There were so many noises like smoke alarms, Fire engines, yelling. When I
reached floor number 6 I started to feel relieved. The stairwell got lighter as I got closer to the exit, It was like someone had just lifted a brick wall off my back. I could breathe easier now. I could see the door and was sprinting towards the exit. As I ran out the door a piece of heavy wood fell on my leg leaving me trapped, I couldn’t move and I was getting burnt by the hot ashes falling from the fire above me. The pain was excruciating and there was nowhere to run!
