We are the TV hosts of tomorrow.
We are the TV hosts of tomorrow. YouTube has changed everything. What we watch, who we watch, when we watch and where we watch. In the space of 10 years television has gone from being a stationary box, a huge one, that sat in the corner of every lounge with a set schedule. Now it is on your home computer, your iPad, tablet or phone. It is at the park, at the bus stop, in the class and anywhere you want it to be. But the presenters are just like you and me. They are our age. They tell us about stuff that interests us and they can be watched with such flexibility. The content is simply amazing!
With three hundred hours of video being uploaded every minute it's impossible to run out of videos to watch. This is why so many people are turning to YouTube to watch TV shows and videos. The amazing thing about YouTube is that it's great for everything! I know we are all very busy people here at Balmacewen and watching TV is hard as your favourite shows only happen at certain times and fitting videos around the standard on the go lifestyle is challenging. So it's awesome to have something that we can just chuck in a bag or pocket and watch TV on it whenever we want.
YouTube is also a much more enjoyable experience as you can choose what you watch and there are hardly any ads. I mean don't you hate it when you're watching your favourite show and you're just about to find out something that the whole series has been building up to then up pops an ad for two-minute noodles! Yeah there are some ads on YouTube but most are only five seconds long before you can skip them and compared to the two minute ad breaks on normal TV it's nothing! And don't you hate sick days when all you can find on TV is infomercials and boring health shows! If it weren't for YouTube we would all be wishing we could go back to school instead!
But how else is YouTube useful?
YouTube is great for education and research as people can easily hop on to their computers and find a guide for almost anything. As there are so many people creating content there is a YouTube community for almost anything. Whether it's fish keeping or photography there is always videos out there to teach you how to do it!
There is also some pretty inspirational people on YouTube like Funforlouis a travel channel that inspires people to "live the adventure!" He is a vlogger or video blogger who travels the world taking his camera with him! He tells people to get up and have some fun and stay active!
YouTube is very practical in the way that news is now instant and can be presented with opinions and expert advice. Learning has also gone online through YouTube with universities posting lectures to catch up on and have to study with. There are also some other great channels like TED Talks and Khan Academy. These can be great for studying for projects and also learning more about the world around us!
Okay so YouTube sounds pretty perfect, educational, fun and portable but it wasn't always like this YouTube is a social networking site and with all social networking sites there are flaws. The site started out very small with the first video uploaded was on April 23rd 2005 called "Me at the zoo"
Since the site was so small the users were stereotyped as sixteen year old boys sitting in their parents basements or people who just like to watch cat videos. And to some extent that was true. Many of the earlier viral videos were what most adults would call junk. Cat playing pianos, people singing about chocolate rain, teachers dancing and one of the most popular viral hoaxes, worst twerk fail ever, which was scripted and produced by Jimmy Kimmel as a publicity stunt for his talk show!
And since YouTube is a social networking site there is some inappropriate stuff on YouTube. But this can be filtered out easily.
I like to think of YouTube as a hub for creativity, news and opinions where people share findings, tips and ideas. People have their say and create content that we like to watch. Whether it's vloggers like Alfie, Marcus, Tyler Oakley, Funforlouis, Dan is not on fire or amazing Phil or educational channels, inspirational channels or just getting your fix of cat videos for the week, there is always a channel for you.
The YouTube community is astounding and it's so easy to get involved. So why don't you?
