The First Chapter
An Encounter
Sliding towards the gate I stuffed the cheesy handful of lightly toasted bread in my mouth and took off down the barely moon lit street. It was so very dark that all I could see were faint smudges of what could be identified as neighbouring homes, the occasional splash of light projected by few and far between street lamps or lanterns, as it were in this small village and that familiar bus stop I visited almost every day to get to school. I huffed a sigh of relief, " I'm finally away from that stuffy cottage me and my family called home..." I thought. "I mean it did have its perks ...the petite thatched roof, the immaculately kept lavender garden bordering the white picket fence, frosted windows outlined by snowy white frames, cobbled walls and oh how could I forget...the tree house! I remember when I was little I was always up that spindly rope ladder, peeking through the holes in the wooden wall, recycled from our grandparents old fence that I called windows. Blowing bubbles off the branch supported balcony. Those were the days before I grew up. Oh yeah and before the infestation of magic!" "Grrrr" "Oh no". I dived under the bus stop. Someone was loitering in the street! Or was it something?
The village was very quaint, only about about 100 people so everyone knew everyone, but I had never met this person! I squinted as the figure, was finally hit by the Rays of light coming off the spotlighted street lamps. First an arm, then a leg or was that a tail? I nearly screamed when it saw the face. I jolted upright and held my breath. I had never seen a creature like this, but all the parts looked recognisable as at first a lion face but was that a snakes tongue? The green reptilian form and horse like tail were worse, but what was really scarring me was the sounds that it was making!"
The monstrous beasts slowing slithered off. "That was a close call! But luckily I'm nearly there, but where. I expect its at the town hall, I mean where else. I can't believe I am doing this." I said to myself. "What about my brother and sis, well they'll be fine. And why an I arguing with myself! I'm just nervous," I thought. "It's been crazy, I mean everything was just ... well .... normal ... to an extent... But then the world was seemingly turned upside down when the creatures started appearing , crazy freaks of nature! Roaming about, causing havoc and since we are just the small insignificant town of Hemlock we were left to fend for ourselves and that's why my stupid parents are at a meeting and no one has told me anything!"
